Harvesting the Juice
Harvesting the precious sap from the Arenga Pinnata is a manual process and something that has been practiced traditionally by the locals for centuries. Twice a day the tapper will climb the Arenga Pinnata to collect the juice, which can range from from 15 – 50 liters a day. Each day employees from the factory will drive to the local villages to collect the juice from the farmers. The juice is tested for acidity and sugar content before it is loaded onto the truck. The quantity collected can be anything from 7,000 liters or more per day.
Making The Sugar
Once at the factory the juice is filtered and cooked in stainless steel pans, which are heated from the Geo-thermal rest steam that is pumped into the factory (for free) from the PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy plant, next door. The juice is stirred manually through several stages until a soft, brown, caramel infused powder is formed, or is poured into moulds to produce sugar blocks. The granulated sugar and sugar blocks are then packed and shipped around the globe.
In addition to manufacturing delicious and healthy Arenga Pinnata Sugar, several other products are also manufactured from this miraculous tree to include; Bio Ethanol, Rum, Honey, Vinegar, Kolang Kaling, Arenga Pinnata Fibres & Wood.
